Ushers, Offertory and Oblation Bearers

If you are interested in helping before and during and a short while after a service, this ministry may be for you.  Before each service, ushers greet and welcome people as they enter the church, hand out bulletins, and answer questions from newcomers.  During the service, they assist with the offerings and the flow for communion.  They are also available to help in any other way needed.  Following the service, they clean and straighten the pews for the next service.  Ushers work as teams and generally serve once a month or as they are scheduled.  They arrive about 20 minutes before the service begins and stay for a short while afterwards to help clean up.

Oblation bearers act as representatives of the people when they bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar in preparation for communion.  The only time requirement for Oblation bearers is during the service at the offertory.

We encourage people of all ages and abilities to assist in these areas of service to the church.   Older children with a parent are especially invited to participate and begin to serve.  Training is usually once a year or as needed when procedures change or we welcome new volunteers.  For more information or to become a volunteer, please contact Nancy Camp (ushers@ststephenshouston.org) or the church office at 713-528-6665.
